The Realisation of Reality
The Realisation of Reality
Written, produced and performed as Rage Against the Dying Light, this song, video and accompanying artwork provides an exploration of the band name, which was taken from a refrain from Dylan Thomas’s 1951 poem, “Do not go gentle into that good night”: “Rage, rage against the dying of the light”.
The “dying of the light” represents death or the end of life, while “rage” signifies fighting back, living intensely, and not accepting mortality quietly.
It is a plea for vitality and strength, suggesting that even when death is inevitable, one should live passionately.
The “Realisation of Reality” is that lightbulb moment, when the inevitability of mortality presents itself, and therefore the song title and the band name become inextricably bound together.
For this artist, his own realisation of reality happened when life-changing illness came calling. This work is a partial response, and acceptance, of this new and ongoing reality that only has one outcome, no matter the outcome.
